Students get tree-planting lesson

A statewide trek promoting fruit tree planting, environmental awareness and sustainability to elementary school students stopped at Santa Ynez Valley Charter School on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The “Fruit Tree Tour” from Common Vision, an organization dedicated to creating changes in health, hunger, environmental justice and climate change through education and community action, taught about 160 students from the third- through eighth-grades how to plant peach, apple, fig and other fruit trees in the school’s garden and how to mainain the plantings.
The stop marked the first Santa Ynez Valley visit for the Ukiah-based group, said Megan Watson, the tour’s project director.
Some of the 20 Common Vision volunteers, who arrived in two bio-fueled buses, worked with students to create signs for the trees.
Tonya Crandall, the school’s Parent Teacher Student Organization president, helped arrange the visit and get grant funding to pay for it.
Crandall said the focus on hands-on interaction and the education component is what the school was looking for.
“It’s very sucessful in that regard,” she said during the visit.
