Biofuels

Common Vision fuels all of its vehicles on Recycled Vegetable Oil, a clean-burning and renewable substitute for diesel fuel. We believe that that biofuels are a neccessary step in diversifying modern fuel consumption, and thus promoting social and environmental justice. > View our past projects.

What is the difference between Biodiesel and Straight Vegetable Oil?

Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) and Biodiesel are two types of vegetable oil based fuels. Biodiesel, or tri-methyl-esters, is vegetable oil that has undergone a chemical reaction in order to reduce the viscosity. This chemical process involves mixing the vegetable oil with methanol and lye to separate the vegetable oil molecule into glycerin and tri-methyl-esters. The glycerin is then removed and the remaining product is Biodiesel. SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) is unprocessed vegetable oil used as fuel. Alterations are necessary to run a diesel engine one vegetable oil.
