What is the difference between Biodiesel and Straight
Vegetable Oil?
Straight Vegetable Oil (SVO) and Biodiesel are two types of
vegetable oil based fuels. Biodiesel, or tri-methyl-esters, is vegetable oil
that has undergone a chemical reaction in order to reduce the viscosity. This
chemical process involves mixing the vegetable oil with methanol and lye to separate
the vegetable oil molecule into glycerin and tri-methyl-esters. The glycerin is
then removed and the remaining product is Biodiesel. SVO (Straight Vegetable
Oil) is unprocessed vegetable oil used as fuel. Alterations are necessary to
run a diesel engine one vegetable oil.
